Recovering After a Relapse
Recovering after a relapse means returning to the attempt to stop or reduce pornography use after a period of use. Community members describe this as one of the most important skills in the whole process.
What members describe as helpful
- Treating the relapse as information. Ask what preceded it, not "what is wrong with me."
- Reducing shame. Members frequently say the shame after a slip was harder than the slip itself, and that reducing it allowed a quicker restart.
- Restarting with a small step. A concrete next action — removing a trigger, telling someone, planning the evening — rather than a grand new plan.
- Not starting the count from zero. Many members describe continuing their progress rather than treating a slip as erasing everything.
These are community-reported approaches, not proven interventions. They are offered because they are the moves members most often describe as working for them.
