COMMUNITY PATTERN

Meditation

Type: community reported

What It Is

A practice of paying attention to the present moment, often through breathing, used to observe urges without acting on them.

Meditation is a practice of returning attention to the present, often using the breath. Some community members describe it as helping them observe an urge as a passing feeling rather than something they must immediately act on.

This is a community-reported strategy. Mindfulness and meditation have broader research support for attention and emotional regulation, but direct study of meditation specifically for problematic pornography use is limited. Members often note that it works best when practiced regularly, not only in moments of crisis.

How People Use It

Limitations

Takes practice; many people report it is hard to use in the middle of a strong urge without a prior habit.
